The nation's 39 federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs) spent $17.4 billion on research and development in FY 2012. This was a slight decline from the $17.8 billion spent in FY 2011. Funding from federal agencies accounted for 97.5% ($17.0 billion) of the FFRDC's total expenditures in FY 2012, $352 million of which was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
